Environmental enrichment has been severely lacking in pet snake keeping more years! It is now becoming understood that they are much smarter than previously thought and there are increasing pet snake advocates out there now that are recommending we do better!
Snake Haus has always believed in enrichment as a vital part of husbandry. There are many different things you can do in a standard enclosure to provide enrichment opportunities for your snake. Things such as hides, climbers, temperature gradients, swimming opportunities, and variable textures can make a huge difference to your snake’s attitude and overall wellbeing.
We will continue to add examples of enrichment to this page of the next few weeks.
Swings
Hanging a swing inside your snake’s enclosure does several different things! Not only is it a opportunity to climb but the movement helps give them an extra level of interest and can help them grow strength and balance. There are several different ways to do this.
We prefer to hand a swing in the shape of an L with the short arm under the heater so it becomes their basking spot. Not all enclosures are big enough for this however and different materials can make it harder to do. See some examples below.
Here is a video to show how to hang swings inside a PVC enclosure where the cage material is not strong enough to support the weight of a snake swing:
